Ovulation Disorders
Every month a normally ovulating female releases a mature egg according to precise timing governed by hormones. This process of follicle development and ovulation is so complex that small changes can disrupt the balance and prevent ovulation.
Ovulation disorders are one of the most common causes of fertility challenges and present in 30-40 percent of women. Ovulation disorders such as infrequent or absent ovulation (anovulation) often results in infrequent periods (oligomenorrhea).
Ovulation disorders can lead to some of the following challenges:
- fewer changes to conceive
- challenges in determining the most fertile times
- eggs not being released from the follicle
- eggs being released out of sync with other factors necessary for fertilization and implantation
Some common causes of ovulation disorders are:
- hypothalamus dysfunction
- hyperprolactinemia
- polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
- ovarian cysts
- luteal phase defect
- pituitary or adrenal tumors
- primary ovarian falilure (POF)
- resistant ovarian syndrome
